Over time, this extra strain on the heart can weaken it and contribute to heart failure. c) Diabetes () Uncontrolled diabetes can damage blood vessels and nerves over time, increasing the risk of coronary artery disease and heart failure. Risk Factors for Heart Failure a) Age () The risk of heart failure increases with age, as the heart's muscles and blood vessels may weaken over time. b) Family History () Having a family history of heart disease or heart failure can increase an individual's risk.
